Bowen first Mexico girl wrestler to sign for college

Katie Bowen already had several important firsts for the Mexico girls wrestling program.

It was announced on Facebook on Sunday that the senior is signing to wrestle for William Woods University in Fulton, making Bowen the first Lady Bulldogs to continue her career in college. The Owls’ program began its inaugural season in October.

Mexico’s girls wrestling program is not much older as it goes into its fourth season. In the Lady Bulldogs’ first year, Bowen became their first ever state qualifier and came home with its first ever medal after finishing third. Bowen had a good sophomore follow-up campaign by making it to state again and just finishing short of another medal.

“I am bursting with pride and happiness for Katie Bowen,” head coach Tony Senor posted on Facebook. “She is a trailblazer. She still has this year left, and we have some unfinished business before she goes to the next level.”

After missing last season, Bowen is ready to cap her high school career before going to the same program that signed fellow area wrestler Gretchen Marriott, from Centralia, earlier this year.
