Mexico boys basketball started the week with a dominant victory over Hannibal.
Mexico completed a season sweep of the Pirates on Tuesday night with a 83-57 road rout. Mexico shot 70% from the field and 57.1% from deep as the Bulldogs blew past Hannibal.
Senior Raef Yager finished with a team-high 30 points and went 11-for-16 from the field, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Zach Watkins and Isaiah Reams were also in double figures with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Mexico forced 18 turnovers and converted those into 28 points.
The Bulldogs distributed 17 assists on 31 made field goals.
The win over the Pirates was Mexico’s sixth straight victory and the Bulldogs’ eighth win in their past nine games.
That streak ended in the regular-season finale against Fulton, however.
The Hornets escaped the teams’ first meeting with a one-point victory Jan. 3. Thursday night wasn’t as close, as Fulton defeated the visiting Bulldogs 89-77.
Mexico (13-11) is scheduled to host Moberly (2-21) at 9 p.m. Monday in the first round of the Class 4 District 8 Tournament. The Bulldogs have defeated the Spartans twice this season, each time by double digits.
Mexico girls lose for first time in a month
Mexico girls basketball dropped its first game since Jan. 28 with a 54-53 loss at Hannibal on Tuesday.
Hannibal shot 40.5% from the field and made 17 free throws in the victory. It was a rematch of the Bulldogs’ third game of the season, where Mexico blew Hannibal out 55-27.
Mya Miller led the way with 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists in the loss. Logan Blevins was the only other Bulldog in double figures, with 18 points and six rebounds.
Mexico (17-6) was scheduled to play at Fulton in its regular-season finale Friday night.
Next week the Bulldogs are set to host the Class 4 District 8 Tournament as the No. 1 seed. They are scheduled to play either Kirksville or Moberly at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinals.
