“I was just left open under the basket a lot.”
That was Daeye Miller’s explanation for the 21 points he put up on Saturday afternoon at Hannibal. How did he account for the 15 rebounds he racked up?
“The ball just fell to me,” he said.
Miller was just one weapon wielded by coach Darren Pappas as the Bulldogs finally took the floor against the Pirates in the oft-postponed encounter. Despite a late night in Marshall on Friday, Mexico held Hannibal at bay to claim a 54-39 win.
“The offense struggled,” said head coach Darren Pappas. “It is what it is.”
Apart from Miller’s double-double and 14 points put up by Isaiah Reams, the Bulldog’s victory belonged to the defense. Mexico shot just 40 percent from the floor, but held the Pirates to a 34 percent rate. The Bulldogs pulled off 12 steals, forced 19 turnovers and pulled down 23 defensive rebounds compared to 16 for Hannibal.
“We were just executing,” Reams said.
Reams had a huge night on Friday, scoring 20 against Marshall. He continued his rampage with a pair of threes and 5 rebounds on Saturday.
“It gave me a lot of confidence,” he explained, sorting out the effect of Friday night’s success.
Raef Yager had 6 points and 3 boards. Drew Blevins almost matched, with 5 points and 3 rebounds.
Ty Prince, Michael White, Peyton Willer and Jordan Mitchell tacked on 2 each.
The Bulldogs are now 16-3.
30 point romp at Marshall
At the end of the first quarter on Friday night at Marshall, the Bulldogs held a 19-2 lead.
“We just locked down,” said Ty Prince. “Our defense played really well.”
Mexico ended up with a 62-32 blowout on the road thanks to a monster night by Isaiah Reams. The versatile junior hit 8 of 10 from inside the arc, a flawless 4 of 4 from three point land and shared 6 assists.
“He was on fire,” Pappas said.
As were the Bulldogs. Every aspect went well – 18 transition points, 25 points off turnovers, only 10 turnovers. The team recorded 25 defensive boards, controlling the opposite end of the court.
“Our rebounding was good, our boxing out was good,” said Raef Yager.
Yager had 8 points and 4 boards. But the Bulldogs didn’t need anyone else under the glass than Daeye Miller, who yanked down 14 – to go with 4 assists and 4 steals.
Miller had 5 points. Jordan Mitchell pitched in 7. Michael White had 6, Ty Prince 4 and Dominic McKeown tapped in a single and hauled in 3 boards.
“Anyone can score on any night,” coach Darren Pappas said.
