Centralia boys wrestling continued to dominate in Class 1 on Saturday.
The Class 1 District 3 tournament the Panthers were in Friday and Saturday in Marceline was a big challenge — with five of the state’s top 10 schools and eight of the 14 weight classes having at least four top-10 wrestlers — but they defeated Father Tolton 190-182 for their fifth straight district title. Nine Centralia boys qualified for the Class 1 state tournament that is scheduled to start at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday at Mizzou Arena.
Rex Bryson at 157 pounds, Wyatt Adkisson at 165 and Ian Tuggle at 215 won district championships. Bryson had three first-minute pinfalls before beating Marceline’s Conner Quinn for the title, Adkisson had a first-minute pinfall and 16-7 major decision before championship pinfall over Palmyra’s Brayden Pillars, and Tuggle had three first-period pinfalls before a 3-1 decision over Lafayette County’s Caden Munson for first place.
The rest to qualify included second-place wrestlers Charlie Robinson at 126, Weston Ward at 144 and Louis Suddarth at 150 third-place grapplers Bryson Dubes at 106, Waylon Adkisson at 113 and Cade Smith at 285.
The Panthers will have four members of their inaugural state championship team from a year ago, including Dubes, Ward, Bryson and Wyatt Adkisson. Ward and Bryson were runners-up at their respective weight classes at state last year, and Dubes came away with a third-place medal. The rest are first-time qualifiers for Centralia.
