Monday’s start isn’t what Centralia girls wrestling wanted, but the finish was good.
At the fifth annual Brick City Classic in Mexico, Avery Adams at 100 pounds and Kyleigh Dollens at 145B finished first in their weight classes while Avery Griggs was second at 110 and Analeigh Bruce was third at 115 to each medal.
Head coach Mike Adkisson said he talked to his team early on Monday and liked the results after the meeting.
“We had a bit of a slow start today,” Adkisson said. “We regrouped after the first round. We came together and had a talk. I saw a lot better effort from the girls after that and a lot better attitude. Usually, when you put those two things together, good things happen.”
Adams won by pinfall four times and beat district foe Carly Williams, of Fort Zumwalt South, via a 13-10 decision to be undefeated during the day.
Dollens won by pinfall three times. She pinned district foe Erika Pech, of Mexico, but had also defeated her via a 12-6 decision for a 4-0 record.
“It’s the best Kyleigh’s wrestled this year by far,” Adkisson said. “She was on the attack all day long, and she was aggressive all the time. When she is aggressive and on the hunt, she is a much better wrestler.”
Griggs and Bruce are two other underclassmen that medaled on Monday to give Centralia hardware throughout the team, which Adkisson said helps build momentum into a busy week. Centralia wrestles Mexico in the teams’ second dual meeting this season at 5:30 p.m. tonight in Mexico.
“We’re trying to build as much momentum as we can while staying healthy,” Adkisson said. “Keep wrestling hard with good attitudes and great effort to have success.”
