Centralia injuries pile up, lets late lead slip for 36-34 loss to Monroe City

Injuries are never a good thing on the football field.

They really were prominent for Centralia on Friday night at home when the Panthers lost a 34-22 lead after the third quarter to lose 36-34 to Clarence Cannon Conference foe Monroe City. After amassing 147 total offensive yards, Rex Bryson sustained a leg injury (believed to be a high ankle sprain) in the fourth quarter.

Head coach Tyler Forsee was at a loss for words after such a tough moment and night.

“It was a back-and-forth game,” Forsee said. “Hats off to Monroe City for a good game plan. We traded punches back and forth and just didn’t come out on top.”

Yards were about even as Centralia (2-2, 1-1 CCC) just outgained Monroe City (2-2, 1-1 CCC) in total yards at 378 to 360 and both teams had at least 240 rushing yards. Louis Suddarth led Centralia on defense with 13 tackles, Zarek Poe followed with eight tackles and two tackles for loss, Charlie Robinson had seven tackles and a tackle for loss, and Ashton Price had five tackles and two tackles for loss.

“They did a good job formation-wise to try to get us off cue a little bit of who we have in the pass game,” Forsee said. “They were able to get a big pass play on a third-and-long on a kid wide open we were able to get up to and tackle. That was a huge first down. They were able to take the lead on that drive because we almost had a quarterback sack but had a miscommunication in the secondary of who had who.”

Ethan Ross ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, and Deke Maenner had 94 yards and two touchdowns on four carries. Forsee said Centralia usually has quite a bit of players to use out of the backfield, but that has shrunk in the first four games.

Bryson broke his leg Friday, but Forsee said Jesse Caballero, Drayden Conde and Breylen Whisler were also out with injuries. He said Centralia had big passing plays, including Anthony Ford catching two passes for 80 yards and Logan Rosenfelder receiving a 30-yard throw, but there will be things needed to figure out before the Panthers’ conference game at 7 p.m. Friday at Macon (0-4, 0-1 CCC).

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Forsee said when talking about all of his injured running backs. “It’s a lot of big hitters.”
