Centralia volleyball wins title in Eugene, then defeats Eugene at home

Centralia volleyball extended its winning streak with a tournament victory in Eugene and continued against the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Panthers won the Eugene tournament on Saturday without losing a set after sweeping Kirksville in three sets on Oct. 10. They defeated Russellville (25-19, 25-23); Cuba (25-20, 25-20) and then Sacred Heart (25-23, 25-11) for the championship. Centralia then swept Eugene (25-19, 25-17 and 25-22) on Monday for its Senior Night to bring its match winning-streak to five and set-winning streak to 12.

Centralia owns a 17-6 record going into the Class 3 District 7 tournament in Fulton this week. The Lady Panthers are the No. 2 seed and will face winner of No. 3 seed Boonville (11-15-1) and No. 6 Marshall (1-19) at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Centralia unable to achieve balance in 48-14 conference title loss at South Shelby

Centralia was able to see South Shelby’s toughness firsthand on Friday.

The Class 3 No. 4 Panthers engaged Class 2 No. 7 South Shelby in a state-ranked battle on the road for the Clarence Cannon Conference title only to lose 48-14. The Cardinals took control early by leading 20-0 after the first quarter and then kept pouring it on with 358 rushing yards.

Head coach Tyler Forsee said South Shelby (8-0, 6-0 CCC) is stout up front, but tackling its running backs presents a different problem. Kendal Hammond finished with 263 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.

“We could not get him down even though we were there as he is a tough runner,” Forsee said. “He broke an 80-yard run against us, and when he wasn’t doing that, he was still plugging away up the middle for a pretty good gain.”

Centralia (7-1, 5-1 CCC) had to throw the ball 38 times, completing 18 passes, because the run game wasn’t productive early in the game. Forsee said Centralia lost its balance it tries for every week but resembled an offense closer to this in the second half.

Elliott McCoy had two touchdown catches and Cayden Dunn was the leading receiver with six catches for 68 yards, but Jesse Caballero was eventually able to get going with 61 yards on 14 carries. Caballero also led the defense with 11 tackles, followed by 10 tackles and nine tackles from Ashton Price and Emery Mast.

“We had several drops tonight, which is something we don’t normally do, but I think our kids were trying to make more plays than they what they should,” Forsee said. “(South Shelby) hit the holes fast, they do a lot of pulling and get another guy or two extra to the point of attack. It’s tough to get as many bodies there as we need and still be gap sound.”

Forsee said Centralia wants to focus on staying healthy and gaining momentum as it closes its regular season at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Clarence Cannon Conference and district foe Macon (0-8, 0-6 CCC), hoping to make it 2-0 against district opponents this season.
