Windy conditions may have been the only thing that tested the Colonels as they took on Columbia Independent School on Monday – at least according to the outcome.
Missouri Military Academy conceded only eight games on their way to a sound 9-0 match win at CIS.
“Despite the final score, CIS played a very good match,” MMA head coach Brad Smith observed, citing the home side’s youth. “They have a great future ahead of them.”
On opening day, however, it was the Colonels’ deep pool of talent that won out.
Playing a pro set 8 format, Isaac Way captured the number one set 8-2 and was followed by Simon Way, who took the number two battle by the same score.
From that point on, MMA gave up just one game. It came in Samuel Way’s comfortable 8-1 outing. Marco Tavarez, Gorka Yarte and Nathan Dempsy each swept their way to 8-0 wins.
In the doubles round, Isaac and Simon Way were almost unstoppable, dropping just one game. Tavarez and Yarte claimed an 8-2 set while Dempsy and Samuel Way blanked their opponents 8-0.
“The Tennis team was very excited to play for our first match this year,” Smith said. “We have a lot of talent on the team and we are eager to continue.”
In the lone JV set, Bradford Wright continued the sweep theme, winning 6-0.
