Community R-6 lost on Saturday to the best from a season ago but came out with a trophy.
The Lady Trojans finished third at the Cairo Tournament after winning 6-5 against Palmyra, losing 9-6 to the defending Class 1 state champion and defending Cairo Tournament champion La Plata and then defeating Class 4 Kirksville 6-1 in the third-place game.
Community (12-5) needed a rally in the sixth and final inning against Palmyra, going into the bottom half of the inning trailing 5-3. After having a run walked in, Jocelyn Curtis walked off the game with a two-RBI double. Curtis finished 2-for-4, Peyton Schafer was 2-for-3, and Myla Carroll allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and three walks in six innings pitched.
La Plata used a seven-run fourth inning to gain the advantage, but the hits were at an even eight. Carroll had a massive game by going 3-for-3 with four RBI and two doubles, Schafer had a RBI and six of the nine runs Curtis allowed in five innings were recorded as unearned.
Curtis pitched the following game against Kirksville and limited the Lady Tigers to an unearned run on five hits and two walks in six innings while striking out eight. Lydia Hoyt was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double, and Schafer and Amy McCurdy each had a RBI. McCurdy scored three runs and walked twice.
Community plays in the Paris Tournament on Saturday.
