It wasn’t easy, but the Community R-6 girls program continued to roll on Friday.
The Lady Trojans secured their sixth straight 20-win season with a 46-43 victory at Central Activities Conference and district foe Glasgow on Friday night. Community was down by 13 points at one moment during the game but scored 30 points in the second half to earn the victory.
“We couldn't buy a bucket in the first half and found ourselves down 13 at one point,” head coach Bob Curtis said. “We did this earlier in the year versus New Franklin and clawed our way to a victory.”
Curtis said the Lady Trojans (20-4, 8-1 CAC) only led for two minutes but for a perfectly timed two minutes down the stretch. The press helped the team turn Glasgow (9-13, 3-5 CAC) over several times to complete the comeback.
Sarah Angel led with 15 points and four steals, Kayla Jett followed with nine points, Olivia Kuda had seven points, and Kylie Brooks and Brooklynn Glasgow each had five points. Angel hit some key free throws, and Peyton Beamer’s two points were huge as they were free throws to seal victory in the final minute.
Community tried to avenge a 50-24 loss from this season and also move past Class 2 No. 3 Cairo (21-3, 8-0) for first place in the conference standings on Tuesday night at home. After that, the Lady Trojans plays the winner of Glasgow and Madison as the No. 1 seed in the Class 1 District 10 Tournament at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in Madison.
The Trojans also played at Glasgow on Friday night, losing 92-42 to the district foe Yellowjackets (17-6, 6-2 CAC). Community (13-12, 5-4 CAC) hosted Cairo (15-9, 7-1 CAC) on Tuesday after losing 65-33 earlier this season to the Bearcats and then will face Columbia Independent (1-16) as the No. 3 seed in the Class 1 District 10 Tournament at 6 p.m. Feb. 20 in Glasgow.
