North Callaway takes away Parker, add free throws late in 43-41 win against Montgomery County

It took North Callaway three tries to defeat Montgomery County, but the Thunderbirds won when it mattered most.

North Callaway is set to play for the Class 3 District 7 tournament title against Hermann (22-5) at South Callaway in Mokane after edging Eastern Missouri Conference champion and No. 2 seed Montgomery County. The Thunderbirds had two losses against the Wildcats, who hadn't lost to an EMO opponent all season whether it be in conference games or a tournament.

Montgomery County's 6-foot-7 Clayton Parker was clearly a focus as North Callaway (15-12) played a triangle and one type defense to limit the Wildcats' leading scorer to five points through three quarters and 11 points total. Parker hit two long-range 3-pointers in the fourth quarter when the Thunderbirds overtook the Wildcats (19-8) after trailing most of the game.

Matthew Weber led the Thunderbirds with 13 points, knocking four free throws late in the game to help seal the victory. Sam Pezold went 3-for-4 from the line after missing Monday's game. North Callaway also had five fouls going into the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

North Callaway plays No. 1 seed Hermann, who defeated South Callaway 67-54 on Wednesday, at 6 p.m. Friday. The Thunderbirds and Bearcats haven't met since 2020, when North Callaway won 44-40 in a regular season tournament at South Callaway.

Van-Far loses to stronger Cairo team 77-59

The Van-Far boys had been playing its best basketball during a seven-game winning streak but so has Cairo.

Van-Far's overall record closes at 17-11.

Community R-6 gives state-ranked Higbee fight but loses 59-58

The Community R-6 boys still gave its Class 1 District 10 tournament semifinal in Glasgow their best shot as they fell short 59-58, bringing its final record to 14-14.
