Duenke shatters R-6 shot put mark

Records are often broken by narrow margins. Justin Duenke’s throw of 39-08 in the shot put competition at last week’s Westran Open landed a full six feet beyond the previous best for Community R6.

But Duenke didn’t celebrate the historic throw at the time.

“To be completely honest, I didn’t even know I broke it until the next day at school when our track coach told me about it,” he explained.

Duenke’s mark put him in second at the event, behind the 47-01 of Fayette’s Joshua Henderson. And he wasn’t the only Trojan on record pace.

Paige Meyer’s 4-06 in the high jump equaled the school record and put her on the podium in third place.

“After not being in track for two years and picking up where I left off it feels amazing,” Meyer said. “Tying the school record was great and with a little more practice I hope to beat it.”

Duenke doesn’t think his mark will stand for long, either. He is eyeing a run at state and believes it will take 47 feet to get there.

“I believe that this is a reasonable goal,” he said. “I am going to work hard to get to this goal by state.”

It wasn’t just a record setting day for Community. Distance runner Dylan Hoyt won the 1600 and 3200 meter competitions. He finished the 1600 in 5:20.56 and the longer race in 12:26.94. Hoyt crossed the line third in the 800.

On the girls side, Brianna Beamer earned a podium spot in the 800 with a time of 3:24.98, which was good enough for third.

Missouri Military Academy recorded one individual top five at Westran. It came in the 200 meter dash, when Darion Heavens finished fifth at 25.30. Heavens just missed out in the 100 meters, coming in sixth.

The Colonels’ relay team of Heavens, Alejandro Beverido, Kenny Kazoora and Kit Sun Tsui wound up fourth in both the 4x100 and 4x400, with times of 50.06 and 4:19.14, respectively Community’s girls 4x400 relay squad’s time of 4:58.39 put them in fourth. Sarah Angel, Meyer, Emma Angel and Beamer make up the team.

Other notable performances by the Trojans boys include Duenke’s 16th place in discus, slinging it 69-02.25, Clayton Brandt’s 11th place in javelin, hitting the turf at 84-11.75.
