Energy-efficiency upgrades at Mexico School District 59 has allowed more than $123,000 in savings via an Ameren Missouri incentive program.

LED light fixtures and energy-efficient HVAC equipment has allowed the the district to reduce operational costs, according to a news release.

Savings are not allocated toward any particular item, but does allow the district to reduce its operational budget, district spokesperson Marci Minor wrote in an email.

Ameren Missouri’s BizSavers Energy Efficiency incentive program allowed for the savings. The program provides cash incentives for upgrades and is one of 26 programs offered by Ameren.

Hallways and classrooms have received lighting upgrades. More than 4,200 lamps and fixtures were placed with LED lighting. HVAC upgrades took place at Hawthorne Elementary, Eugene Filed Elementary and Mexico Middle School.

“Taking steps to be more energy-efficient is just one way the district is fiscally conservative with taxpayer dollars,” Minor said in a news release. “Our administrative team collaborated with Ameren Missouri to provide the best option to maintain a safe and efficient learning environment for our students; it’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

Helping organizations save on energy costs like the Mexico School District is important to Ameren, Manager of Energy-Efficiency Rich Wright said in the release.

“Often, organizations think they may not be able to afford to upgrade to more efficient technologies, but the beauty of these programs is that, with Ameren Missouri’s cash incentives, as well as the annual energy savings from improvements, these projects quickly pay for themselves and end up saving businesses and organizations a lot of money going forward,” he said.

Missouri schools have saved more than $3.5 million on energy statements and conserved more than 41 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, due to upgrades, according to the release. This is equivalent to 5,000 homes for a full year.
