Fisher need for speed takes him to Saint Louis U track

Charlie Fisher felt at home the first time he raced on a track.

The Mexico senior has found a home for the future as he signed to run track for NCAA Division I Saint Louis University, which he made clear during a signing ceremony on May 6 at the Mexico Sports Complex. Fisher became a three-time conference champion in the boys 200 this season and was all-conference in the 100 and 4x100 relay at the North Central Missouri Conference Championships in Kirksville.

Amongst the big city is a comfortable community, Fisher said, as SLU was the school for the accounting major.

“We visited there twice,” Fisher said. “Both times we’ve been there, it’s been a great place. It felt like a place that’s going to be home for me. It felt like the right place for me to be at.”

Fisher has all the track accolades that earned him the “rewarding” experience of celebrating with his family, friends and coaches last week. He also has plenty for basketball and football, and his senior season was no different. In the winter, Fisher was a Class 4 all-state guard in basketball and was an all-conference and all-district quarterback in football during the fall.

Even though Fisher has played the other sports longer, he said he connected well with track when he started as a freshman. He said he expects to continue competing as a sprinter.

“It felt really new and something that I’ve been striving to get better at throughout my time in high school,” Fisher said. “It’s nothing against the other sports, but I feel like this is the one for me.”

Teams are an important part in each sport, but Fisher said track truly feels like individuals competing against each other. Individuals give their best effort to try and beat opponents, which appeals to Fisher.

“You’re out there by yourself,” Fisher said. “Nobody’s going to save you. For me, it’s a mentality thing where it’s all or nothing when I go out there. I really enjoy that competing aspect of it.”

Fisher appeared to be a natural for track when he said the first 200 he ran resulted in him winning in the conference meet. While the ability was clearly there, Fisher has avoided being complacent.

“It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to what you do,” Fisher said. “The workouts out there sometimes make you feel like you want to die, but you just got to keep going. You can’t let one bad race affect you. It’s a whole season where you’ve got to keep focusing on the goal ahead.”

Fisher is proud of his three-peat as the NCMC boys 200 champion, especially with this being the final year of the conference. His all-state basketball selection also stands out to him because that was the culmination of a lot of hard work.

He has a personal-best 400 time of 51.33 this season and is looking to beat his personal-best times in the 100 and 200 he set last season. Fisher would also like to place at state after falling short in the sectional round last year in the 100, 200 and 4x400 relay.

“Right now, in high school, my goals are to place in state because I haven’t got that opportunity yet,” Fisher said. “I’m going to keep working for that this season.”
