Van-Far football had leadership on the field and the sidelines from a Gibson.
Gage Gibson was voted as first team unanimous running back and strong safety/outside linebacker in the Eastern Missouri Conference and his father and head coach Lucas Gibson was named a co-coach of the year along with Bowling Green’s Mark St. Clair. Six Indians were honored with all-conference selections for a 6-5 bounce-back year for Van-Far.
Gage Gibson, who was voted as a Northeast Media all-district member as a running back and linebacker in Class 1, ran for 941 yards on 178 carries for a 5.3 per carry average and caught 23 passes for 417 yards to score 10 total touchdowns. On defense, Gibson had a team-high 67 tackles, four tackles for loss or sacks and two interceptions.
Jackson Fischer, who is a Northeast Media all-district offensive lineman, made it as a first team offensive lineman after Van-Far averaged 186.6 rushing yards per game and 5.6 yards per carry.
Gibson’s fellow senior Nikos Connaway was a dangerous offensive threat as the quarterback — passing for 979 yards, rushing for 704 yards and scoring a team-high 19 touchdowns — to earn a Northeast Media all-district selection at the position, but caught attention as a first team defensive back and first team punter. Connaway finished with 40 tackles, a team-high four interceptions and two tackles for loss or sacks.
Gaven Gaston provided the Indians with another offensive option as a second team receiver. Gaston finished with 18 catches for 380 yards for a team-high 21.1 yards per catch average and scored five total touchdowns while also rushing for 31 yards on nine carries.
Two members of Van-Far’s defensive line that helped the Indians limit opponents to 22 points per game — first time averaging under 30 points in eight years. Evan Utterback is a second team defensive end after recording 42 tackles, a team-high 18 tackles for loss or sacks and two fumble recoveries. Easton Sharp is a second team defensive lineman after finishing with 28.5 tackles and five tackles for loss or sacks.
