An Illinois man, who was arrested in Mexico on Wednesday morning after an alleged hit-and-run, was found carrying a medium-sized dog at the time of his arrest, according to a Mexico Public Safety news release.
The dog did not belong to him, according to release.
Christian Betts, 32, of Belleville, Illinois, was arrested 6:20 a.m, and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors. When Mexico Public Safety officers located Betts, he allegedly was uncooperative, saying he was “paralyzed with fear” officers would kill him, according to court documents.
Officers responded to a crash at about 4:47 a.m. that same morning in the 600 Block of East Monroe Street. A 2019 Nissan Pathfinder was found in the area and was identified as belonging to Betts.
An investigation found Betts allegedly struck a retaining wall at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital — Audrain, according to court documents. Officers reviewed surveillance footage from the hospital and saw the vehicle back into another wall. The driver then fled on foot. Officers found a traffic summons and business cards inside the vehicle.
Betts visited the tow company that had his vehicle, but he left the business without it, according to court documents. The tow company called Mexico Public Safety who then located Betts.
After Betts’ arrest, he was put into a patrol car without handcuffs and taken to the department. He refused to enter the station, according to court documents. When Betts attempted to walk away, officers attempted to handcuff Betts, who allegedly resisted and was screaming that he was being kidnapped, documents stated.
Betts refused to walk and had to be carried to a holding cell inside the department. He continued his kidnapping claims, requesting a lawyer and a trial. He allegedly struggled with officers as they emptied his pockets, calling one an expletive and a wicked witch.
Court documents do not indicate what officers did with the dog.
