Last week when golfers took on Arthur Hills, the course proved menacing thanks to heavy rain over the previous two days.
On Tuesday’s return visit to the Mexico course, conditions were again less than ideal. This time, however, the players gained greater control. Aiden Knipfel chalked up a round of 40 to lead the Bulldogs, with Grant Qualls recording a 45.
Mexico’s solid one-two punch led the team to a 191 overall round, second to a strong Southern Boone side.
“The course was actually really good,” Qualls said. “The ball rolled well.”
Knipfel finished just three strokes behind Southern Boone’s Jacob Anderson, who topped the leaderboard with a 37. Qualls came in fourth individually, two back of Matthew Potter of Southern Boone.
Qualls said that the team had worked to fix a lot of little flaws over the past week, particularly in their short games.
Knipfel started strongly, carding a birdie and two pars before giving strokes back. Qualls found his rhythm in the early going, as well. He birdied number three, but as happened the week before, he struggled on the final three holes.
“That part of the course gets me every time,” Qualls said.
Jackson Unger fired an even 50 on the day, with Geoffrey Penn coming in at 56 and Landon Love filling out the card with a 60.
On the team leaderboard, it was Southern Boone at 169, Mexico with 191 and Fulton at 212.
In JV, Mexico fielded a full side. Jake Haines led the team with a 60. Tyler Scheiner and Adam Proctor each fired a 63. Tristan Young (69) and Shane Schoneboom (67) also broke 70.
