Lady Bulldogs' threat dies on final call, lose 6-4 to ranked Southern Boone

Posted

Mexico had a chance to tie the game at 6 this morning at Gallop Field in Mexico.

However, Hannah Loyd was called out for leaving third base too early to end the game with a 6-4 loss to Class 3 No. 5 Southern Boone (19-9). The Lady Bulldogs (11-13) finished with two hits that both happened in the first inning and were mounting a rally in the seventh inning thanks to two Southern Boone errors and the speed and heads-up baserunning of Kenley Jones. On the second error, Jones scored from second base after enduring a six-pitch at-bat earlier the inning, which followed an eight-pitch at-bat by Scottie Smith. Mexico had runners at second and third base with two outs and Payton Shaw at the plate. Shaw blasted what appeared to be her second RBI double to the base of the right-field fence, but the call was made to end the game.

Hailey Platt finished with a line of seven innings, four walks, three strikeouts, two hits and two earned runs for Southern Boone. Keerstan Ewing pitched seven innings for the Lady Bulldogs with six runs allowed on six hits and one walk and two strikeouts.

Mexico hosts Palmyra (2-17) in its second game of the triangular at 1 p.m. today.
