North Callaway achieved its best Centralia Invitational finish since 2015 by taking third place on Saturday.
That wasn't the extent of the Ladybirds' accomplishments after defeating Class 5 Smith-Cotton 3-2 in the third-place game. Megan Schmidt set a new career-high with 16 strikeouts along with two unearned runs on three hits in seven innings pitched against the Lady Tigers (15-9). She also eclipsed 100 strikeouts this season with 110 after Saturday. Kymorie Myers took the team lead at seven home runs (tied a school record) with three home runs during the day, including two against Smith-Cotton and one against Kirksville. In that 21-6 first-round victory over Kirksville, North Callaway (19-10) hit a school-record five home runs, with two coming from Schmidt, and one each from Myers, Ella Slater and Kendra Pennell.
North Callaway hosts Class 3 No. 1 and Centralia Invitational champion Centralia (20-3) at 5 p.m. Monday.
