The North Callaway Lady Thunderbirds found their stroke last Wednesday enjoying their best shooting game of the 2021-22 season. In the end, it wasn’t enough, as they fell 44-42 to South Callaway in the South Callaway Tournament. The Lady T-Birds were 5-for-8 from behind the three-point arc and 12-for-20 on two-pointers, but 61 percent from the field was impacted by 15 turnovers. That said, the ladies never quit and kept fighting
South Callaway led 14-8 after one quarter and 27-16 at the half, but the Lady Thunderbirds made a second-half run, outscoring South 12-10, 14-7 in the final two quarters. Their rally would fall short in the end, but there’s continued reason for optimism.
“The girls played another good game against another good team,” said coach Tim Turlington.
Turlington feels it’s just a matter of time before his team gets over the hump and looks for good things this week.
Despite drawing the focus of the South Callaway defense, Natalie Shryock led the Lady Thunderbirds with 14 points and 6 rebounds and hit 4-for-6 from three-point land. Abrielle Burgher had 11 points, including 5-for-6 from the field, adding 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Ryelle Schmauch had 7 assists. Riley Blevins didn’t play, which impacted the team’s depth.
South Callaway improved to 8-4 with the win. North Callaway enters this week at 3-9, which has been impacted by COVID-19. The Lady T-Birds games at Fayette Monday, and Wellsville-Middletown Tuesday have been postponed due to COVID-19 protocol. They return to action as they host Clopton Thursday.
