In a battle among a pair of girls basketball teams having just one loss to its resume entering a semifinal game Wednesday at the Sturgeon Invitational, Class 1 second-ranked Community R-VI rose to the occasion.
Behind the 19 points Alexis Welch produced, the second-seed Lady Trojans took a 26-15 command over third-seed Salisbury into halftime and carried on to win 51-38.
For their reward, Community (15-1) reaches Saturday's tournament championship game where they will meet Class 3 No. 5 ranked and top-seed South Callaway with game time set for 5:30 p.m.
“It was a physical, well played game that felt like a playoff game in late February. Alexis has made it a habit of pouring in double-doubles lately and Wednesday night was no different. She was dominant from the tip as Salisbury has three girls pushing 6-foot ,but no matter who they threw at Alexis she kept producing,” said Community girls coach Bob Curtis. “Our bench gave us a huge spark at the end of the first quarter as Emmi Johnson had 2 assists in the frame and a key bucket at the end of the quarter. Also, Lauryn Robnett used her size very well had 6 points to go along with five rebounds in limited minutes and was 4-4 from the line.”
Natalie Thomas put in 10 points, Brianna Beamer added nine and both girls had four assists for the cause. Also scoring was Dalaney Bowers with five points and Emmi Johnson two.
