Painter starts, closes out 8-3 Community R-6 win vs Slater

Paige Painter was in the middle of everything during Tuesday’s home conference win.

Community R-6 defeated Central Activities Conference foe Slater (1-4, 1-3 CAC) 8-3 thanks to 10 strikeouts and two earned runs on two hits and two walks in seven innings pitched from Painter along with her 3-for-4 day at the plate with two RBI.

Jocelyn Curtis finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Amy McCurdy, Alyssa Beamer and Taylor Johnson each had an RBI.

Painter’s single in the first inning allowed Brooklynn Glasgow to score on the play to start a four-run inning and then Painter’s single brought the first run of three in the second inning for the Lady Trojans (9-2, 3-0 CAC).

Community plays at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Paris with Faith Walk (3-5).

North Callaway jumps on Clopton early in 11-4 win

North Callaway’s offense didn’t waste much time on Tuesday at Clopton.

The Ladybirds defeated the Lady Hawks 11-4 in the Eastern Missouri Conference matchup, scoring eight runs in the first inning. They were led offensively by Megan Schmidt going 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI and Kymorie Myers going 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Olivia Knoepflein had an eventful night after coming in to the pitch with one out in the second inning. Clopton (1-5-1, 0-2 EMO) had just scored four unearned runs against Lauren Speight so then Knoepflein struck out a career-high nine and walked two in 5⅓ hitless innings. At the plate, Knoepflein was 2-for-3.

North Callaway (8-3, 3-0 EMO) hosts perennial conference favorite Elsberry (5-2-1) at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Van-Far no-hit by Elsberry in 16-0 loss

The tough losses kept coming for Van-Far softball on Tuesday.

The Lady Indians lost 16-0 in three innings at home to Eastern Missouri Conference foe Elsberry, finishing the game without a hit. Elsberry, meanwhile, had nine hits against Reeve Woodall and Makayla McCurdy.

Mylee Keller walked for Van-Far (0-6, 0-3 EMO) in the first inning but then the bases remained empty against Elsberry (6-2-1, 3-1 EMO).

Van-Far plays at conference foe Mark Twain (1-5, 0-2 EMO) at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Paris quiet in 10-0 loss at conference foe Salisbury

Paris wasn't able to get off the ground on Tuesday night.

The Lady Coyotes lost 10-0 in five innings at Lewis and Clark Conference foe Salisbury (4-2, 1-0 L&C), compiling four hits and four errors to give them their 12th straight loss against the Lady Panthers spanning back to 2013. The errors gave way to five unearned runs allowed by Kennedy Ashenfelter and contributed to Paris' 10th shutout at the hands of Salisbury within that losing streak.

Sylvee Graupman. Reese Sutton, Sophia Crusha and Ashenfelter each had a hit for Paris (3-5, 1-1 L&C).

Paris hosts Community R-6 (9-2) at 5 p.m. tonight.

Missouri Military Academy hangs 8-0 victory on Canton with pair of hat tricks

A couple of Colonels were offensive stars on Tuesday night.

MMA defeated Canton (0-3) 8-0 at home and were led by hat tricks scored by Gabriel Rodriguez-Sanchez and Alvaro Gonzalez Farre.

MMA (3-1) plays at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Elsberry with Silex (2-3) before playing Friday and Saturday in the Moberly Invitational. As part of the blue division, the Colonels face Smith-Cotton at 4 p.m. Friday on Moberly’s grass field, Wright City at 11 a.m. Saturday on the grass field, and Kirksville at 4 p.m. Saturday at Central Christian College of the Bible.

Girls golf

Stephens medals for Centralia at Westran Invitational, Mexico, Paris competes

Tess Stephens was a big reason why the Centralia girls were among the best in the field on Tuesday.

Stephens was the medalist after shooting an 88 for the best score out of golfers sent from 18 schools at the Westran Invitational at Heritage Hills Golf Course in Moberly. Centralia finished third with a score 401 to finish behind Highland’s 389 and Hallsville’s 391. 

Centralia’s next best score was Bailey Pace with a 100, Cami Moser followed with a 102 and Lyla Mattison had a 111.

Mexico didn’t have enough golfers for a team score, and Paris had a 499 team score to finish at the bottom. For Mexico, Alexis Henderson shot a 125, Reagn Craig had a 126 and Ella Connell had a 134. For Paris, Riley McKinney led with a 119, Gracie Henry had a 124, Maura Crusha shot a 126 and Miranda Billings had a 130.

Volleyball

  • Centralia wins in three sets (25-12, 25-14, 25-17) at Wright City and JV wins in two sets (25-22, 25-23). The Lady Panthers (4-3) play their Clarence Cannon Conference opener at Brookfield (0-3) at 5 p.m. Monday.

Girls tennis

Blair, Gooch, Whitworth win matches in Mexico's 5-4 loss to Palmyra

The Mexico girls will be looking to flip the result the next time they meet Palmyra (4-2).

The Lady Bulldogs lost 5-4 to their district foe on Tuesday in Mexico. Lani Blair, Katie Gooch and Jyllian Whitworth won their singles matches, with some being tight contests.

Blair won 8-3 and won doubles 8-6 with Claire Hudson.

"Lani Blair has been a solid competitor all year," head coach Kim Costley said. "We'll most likely see them again and we'll need to find a way to flip the score on a couple of matches."

Gooch won singles 9-8 (7-2) but fell short in doubles with Whitworth 8-6. Whitworth won singles 8-4.

Mexico (6-8, 2-1 NCMC) hosts North Central Missouri Conference foe Moberly (0-6, 0-4 NCMC) at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Swimming and diving

MMA swimming wins home meet, Ruas Deluca sets pair of records

It was a record-breaking night for Tiago Ruas Deluca in Missouri Military Academy’s home pool on Tuesday.

MMA won its meet with Columbia Independent and Capital City by scoring 151 points compared to 22 and 12, but the night belong to Deluca as he set school record in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke with respective times of 1:00.16 and 1:01.78.

The Colonels host Hannibal at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 19.

Junior varsity football

MMA JV football wins 12-0 against Fulton

Missouri Military Academy’s junior varsity football team completed a shutout on Monday.

The Colonels defeated Fulton 12-0 at home as Bradley Thumbi caught a touchdown pass from Luke Wolf and Zeke Boyer ran for a touchdown.

MMA JV moves to 2-0 this season and plans to play at Van-Far at 6 p.m. Oct. 9.
