Mexico earns five all-conference players
Mexico girls tennis had several standout performances on Tuesday.
Some were even considered all-conference worthy as five earned honors at the North Central Missouri Conference tournament in Fulton.
"I was pleased with the effort from our girls throughout the tournament," head coach Kim Costley said. "It is sometimes hard to stay locked in for an entire day, but we knew the assignment."
Claire Hudson was first place at No. 3 singles after wins of 8-0 and 8-1 over Hannibal's Addison Sutton and Moberly's Lauryn Snodgrass, and Jyllian Whitworth continued her return from injury with a third place at No. 1 singles following an 8-2 win over Fulton's Marwa Sherzad, a 8-4 loss to Hannibal's Abrielle Krigbaum and a tight 7-6 (7-1) loss to Moberly's Hadley Clevinger.
"Jyllian Whitworth continues to defeat all odds with a broken wrist, finishing third in the conference at No. 1 and earning all-conference honors," Costley said. "Claire Hudson dominated her bracket and is a four-time all-conference winner."
Lucy Gleeson was fourth place at No. 2 singles after beating Fulton's Ina Dawson 8-6 and losing 8-2 to Hannibal's Kasey DeStefane and 6-2 to Moberly's Snodgrass. Marali Herrera and Bailey Christianson were first place at No. 1 doubles after an 8-3 win over Marshall's Rubio and Dickson and an 8-2 victory over Moberly's Gibbs and Owens.
"Lucy Gleeson earned all-conference for the third time and Marali Herrera and Bailey Christianson finished first in their doubles bracket and earned all-conference honors," Costley said. "They recently became doubles partners. These two young ladies continue to get better and focus on key skills in practice."
Mexico was fourth in the team standings at 29 points, and Hannibal won with 46 points.
