North Callaway wrestling was a match short of winning the Callaway tri meet a season ago.

The Thunderbirds won the meet between them, Fulton and South Callaway in decisive fashion Thursday, defeating Fulton 52-30 and South Callaway 63-12.

John Higgins at 126, AJ Siegel at 138, Cashton Holloway at 144, Eli Henry at 150 and Carson Safranski at 157 all won matches for North Callaway.

Henry, a state qualifier, defeated two state-qualifying opponents, pinning South Callaway’s Ayden Munford and defeating Fulton’s Kaden Barnes by an 11-2 major decision. Higgins, Siegel and Holloway were the other Thunderbirds to score a pinfall.

Bulldogs lose tough NCMC battle with Marshall

After the first two matches, it was rough sledding for the Mexico boys Thursday night.

The Bulldogs lost its first dual of the season 37-32 at North Central Missouri Conference foe Marshall despite winning the first two matches decisively. Marshall won seven of the next nine matches to build a big enough lead for the victory.

Reigning state medalist Grant Van Horn took the first match by a 19-2 technical fall in the 138-pound weight class and then Kayle Martin pinned his opponent at the 1:36 mark in the 144-pound match.

Jacob Johnson held on until being pinned at 4:26 in the 144 class before Marshall scored three pins and a major decision in the aforementioned nine-match stretch. Peyton Hoover held out with a 7-6 decision victory in the 175 class, Dalton Arndt pinned his opponent at the 2:26 mark in the 285 class, and Marcos Matuz lost a 5-0 decision in the 215 class.

Casey Minter and Gavin Martin wrapped up the dual with pinfall victories in the 126 and 132 classes, respectively.

Mexico girls fall short in NCMC dual at Marshall

For most of the night, the Mexico girls were trading pins with Marshall.

The Lady Bulldogs lost at their North Central Missouri Conference opponent Thursday night 39-30 as Mexico finished with four pinfall victories and the Lady Owls also had four.

Marshall jumped to a 12-0 lead prior to Layla Fierge pinning her opponent in the third minute of the 110-pound match, Kaylynn Pehle pinning in the fifth minute at 120 pounds and Ali Walotka doing the same in the third minute at 125 pounds for an 18-12 Mexico lead.

Marshall had some points at weights through forfeits before scoring a pin and a 5-3 decision in the 190 match involving Karisa Hayden. Alexus Johns pinned her opponent right at the minute mark of the 235-pound match.

Missouri Military Academy splits Lexington tri meet

Missouri Military Academy wrestling came away with one dual victory from Thursday night.

MMA defeated Lexington 56-20 and lost 57-24 to Knob Noster in the Lexington tri meet. Brett Miles pinned both of his opponents, and six other Colonels won matches. 

Against Lexington, Evan Corley at 190 pounds, Jancarlo Barajas at 215, Ben Huynh at 285, Michael Pfeifer at 144, and Miles at 150 won by pinfall. Caleb Xamis won by a 19-2 technical fall at 120 pounds, and Bryson Powell won via a 10-6 decision at 144.

In the Knob Noster dual, Miles gave MMA six points, and Gabe Canonico won them six more after pinning his opponent in the 157-pound match.
