There were three takeaways from Monday night, when the Bulldogs punished Brookfield 90-20 in the first round of the Macon Tournament to remain unbeaten this season.
“It’s a good way to start out a tournament like this,” said head coach Darren Pappas.
Indeed – it was a win, he was able to give the Mexico bench more experience and the team executed well on both sides of the court.
“Let’s not be satisfied, let’s keep our heads down,” was forward Drew Blevins’ message after the blowout victory.
The third takeaway?
“We just had fun,” observed guard Brayden Dunn.
Twelve Bulldogs put points on the board during the onslaught, four in double-digits. On the defensive end, Mexico’s penchant for trapping and thievery kept Brookfield’s Bulldogs out of rhythm. Carsen Beckman hit their first shot of the game with 2:37 remaining in the first quarter.
And it would be another eight minutes before Brookfield scored again, with just over two minutes to go in the half.
By that point, Mexico had a commanding lead. The short toss by Brookfield’s Desmond Carriker made it 48-5.
Yet it took a few moments for the Bulldogs to mount a charge. In the opening seconds, Isaiah Reams connected with Daeye Miller on a lob pass and Miller drove the baseline for a score. But it would be two and a half minutes before Mexico put anything more on the board.
But those points – Michael White going 2 for 2 from the line – ignited the Bulldogs’ offense. Ten seconds later Reams sank a three. Moments later, Reams and Miller connected again.
Then it was Reams from the line, Reams with a steal, layup and plus one when fouled, Reams with another steal, this time dishing to White. Mexico scored 18 before Brookfield found the net.
“They were trying their hardest, but we were just the better team,” said forward Dominic McKeown.
McKeown put on a display in the second quarter, scoring 6 points in a 21-0 run. Blevins went on a personal tear that started at the end of the half and continued into the third period. A tip in, a lay up, a put back, another lay in and a baby hook gave him a 10 point string.
Dunn terrorized Brookfield in the game’s waning moments. He dropped 9 points, starting with a flawless three midway through the third.
Blevins notched 14 points to lead all comers in scoring on the night. White, Reams and McKeown ended with 10 each, while Dunn and Ty Prince tacked on 9 apiece.
Also on the long list in coach Pappas’ scorebook were Jordan Mitchell (7), Miller (6), Peyton Willer (5), Dante’ Kelley (4), Anthony Shivers (3) and Dante Billups (2).
The win made it 11-0 on the season.
“This group’s an easy group to coach,” Pappas said. “They’re fun to watch.”
