Mexico rallied late, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs lost 7-5 at Fulton on Friday.
For five innings, Hornets’ hurler Dusty Hagans held Mexico bats at bay. It was a 7-0 whitewash going into the top of the sixth.
But lopsided rivalry games don’t go over well. With one down, Ty Sims slashed a single to right and Ty Prince coaxed Hagans into ball four. Brock Smythe, a courtesy runner for catcher Sims, swiped third and scored on a groundout.
With two gone and Prince still on, Daeye Miller, Josh Forbis and Andrew Runge had consecutive base hits. Suddenly it was a 7-4 game.
Mexico head coach Daniel McCarty turned to relieve Jack Wilburn and he set the Hornets down in order, giving the Bulldogs a chance as the game entered its final frame.
Pinch hitter Landon Kleinsorge drew a walk, but he was still poised on first with two out.
With pitch count limits drawing close, Fulton brought in Ethan Burt to pitch. Prince greeted him with a resounding double that scored Kliensorge, further narrowing the gap.
Jesse Fennewald waited out Burt and reached on a base on balls. Allen Walker replaced Burt on the hill, and instead of waiting for him to settle in, Fennewald and Prince pulled off a double steal.
Miller then drew a walk to load the bases. Forbis made contact, but it was not enough.
Fennewald started for the Bulldogs.
