The Mexico girls had a big challenge in the first round on Monday.

The No. 7 seed Lady Bulldogs lost 51-29 to No. 2 seed Hermann in the first round of the Monrtgomery County Varsity Basketball Tournament. Mexico was outsccored 16-0 in the first quarter by the defending tournament champions but then won the middle quarters 23-18.

"We started off pretty flat and struggled to overcome a few good plays from Hermann in the first quarter," head coach Makenzie Mudd said. "We were able to settle down and make some good things happen in the middle of the game and go on a few runs and we made some great defensive stops to slow down Hermann. They are a fast, aggressive, strong shooting team."

Freshman Grace Hudson led Mexico (0-2) with 13 points, and Jo Thurman followed with nine points and six rebounds.

"Grace Hudson was very strong for us in this game and stepped up as a floor leader," Mudd said. "As a freshman, she was a little reserved in our first few games, but it was great to see her push herself and contribute so much in this game."

Mexico plays No. 6 seed, North Central Missouri Conference rival and district foe Fulton (0-2), who lost 57-38 to No. 2 seed Wellsville-Middletown on Monday, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in consolation bracket play in Montgomery County's middle school gym.
