The Mexico girls wanted to notch one win in the Harrisburg Tournament before today so they increased the pressure.

The Lady Bulldogs used their press on defense to overcome a Fayette comeback on Wednesday night to defeat the Lady Falcons 50-45, advancing to today’s consolation final against Linn at noon.

Mexico (7-11) led Fayette (8-9) 27-23 at halftime but fell behind 36-31 going into the fourth quarter, when the Lady Bulldogs outscored Fayette 19-9. Head coach Ed Costley said defensive pressure had a lot to do with that.

“Our press turned the momentum as we got some steals that led to transition scoring opportunities which was a key need for us in this game,” Costley said. “The third quarter was not our best quarter due to many unforced mistakes and struggles to finish in transition.”

Costley said Kylie Burnett and Addison Heim scored some key field goals to start the fourth quarter. Mexico’s top scorers included Claire Hudson with 13 points, Jo Thurman with 10 points, Kenzie Taylor with nine points, and Messiah Simpson with six points.

Costley said the Lady Bulldogs can improve at the free throw line as they finished 8-for-18 in the game and 0-for-4 in the fourth quarter.
