Mexico knocked from districts in OT

It took a miracle shot to end the Bulldogs season.

Almost five minutes into the second overtime period of the opening round in the Class 2 District 6 tournament in Moberly, with the score knotted at 1-1, Spartans striker Chris Coonce drove a free kick over Mexico’s wall. The ball wobbled and dipped, smacking into the corner of the net, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Brock Smythe.

For the Bulldogs it was a game of almosts. The Moberly keeper, Andrew Imgarten, recorded six saves on the night. And a last second chance in regulation ricocheted off a Spartans defender.

It was a defensive battle throughout. Neither side could break through until midway through the second half, when Coonce put the hosts on top. Jordan Mitchell scored the equalizer with just over ten minutes remaining to set up the double overtime thriller.

The 2-1 loss was Mexico’s second of the season in OT and dropped the team from district play.

Three named to all-district squad

Despite falling short in the opening round, the Bulldogs made an impression on Class 2 District 6 coaches. Forward Jordan Mitchell and two defenders – Carter McIntosh and Hunter Woolfolk – received all-district honors.
