Mexico boys win second straight title with home Autumn Classic victory
The Mexico boys runners made it two straight victories.
The Bulldogs won on their home course at Green Estate Park on Tuesday for the Mexico Autumn Classic, defeating Helias Catholic by a three-point margin with 45 points.
Tyler Grimes was Mexico’s top medalist by finishing as the runner-up in the boys 5,000 meters with a time of 17:19. Hunter Bickell followed in seventh out of 72 runners with a 17:47, Brady McCoy was ninth with a 17:54, Guy Fairchild and Andrew Peuster were close to each other with 13th- and 14th-place respective times of 18:16 and 18:31 to round of the boys’ medalists. Helias Catholic’s Ian Benne won with a time of 17:02.
Maggie Ramsey medaled in the girls’ 66-runner field for Mexico with a 15th-place time of 22:27. Alexandra Terry was the next Lady Bulldog in 33rd with a 23:37. Piper Wiegmann defeated St. Dominic teammate Megan Osterholt by a narrow margin of 20:37.68 compared to 20:37.87. St. Dominic won the girls team title with 33 points and by a 43-point margin.
The Mexico junior varsity boys won their 5,000-meter competition as well with 37 points compared to Kirksville’s 49 points. William Bingham was the top Mexico finisher in third place out of 39 runners with a time of 20:23, Christian Frederickson was not far behind in fourth with a 20:26, Kyle Lewis was seventh with a 20:41, Landon Higgins was 12th with a 21:08, and Jacob Quinlan was 17th with a 21:28.
Mexico loses to two district foes, learns seeding
Districts draws ever closer for Mexico boys soccer.
The Bulldogs lost to Class 2 District 4 top seed Moberly 5-0 at home on Monday before losing 5-1 on Tuesday at No. 5 seed Wright City. Mexico learned it will be the No. 6 seed that plays No. 3 and North Central Missouri Conference rival Fulton at 3 p.m. Oct. 28 at Southern Boone in Ashland.
Mexico (6-13-2) has two losses against Moberly’s varsity squad — tying the junior varsity team at 1 during Moberly’s tournament this year — and remains a winless 0-10 in conference play this season. Head coach William Gleeson said Mexico picked up four yellow cards for “minor offenses” while Moberly (13-6, 6-3 NCMC) had no yellow cards.
“It was a physical game,” Gleeson said, “We played well but found ourselves on the wrong side of several calls.”
Tuesday’s game at Wright City (7-12) had multiple weird elements, Gleeson said, including the holes and dips in Wright City’s field and there being two referees available. Goalkeeper Emille Scanavino scored a rare goal on a penalty kick that was granted after Wright City was called for a foul in the box.
“We also played badly,” Gleeson said. “We seemed to lack energy and our usual hustle was not there.”
Mexico’s record against district opponents fell to 2-7-1 as it played at Class 1 Crocker (11-10) on Friday before hosting its regular season finale at 7 p.m. Thursday against Class 3 Helias Catholic (8-11).
