Mexico's Taylor, Grubb named football all-state, all-district in final season

Kendyr Taylor and Morgan Grubb each have supplied Mexico football with high-caliber talent.

Their careers were capped with all-district selections and also all-state nods, recognizing both of them among the best in the state for the second straight year. Taylor was named to the third team offensive line, and the linebacker Grubb was the second team defensive athlete.

Mexico had four others earn honors in Class 3 District 5 including senior running back Anthony Shivers, senior linebackers Andrew Runge and Matt McCurdy, and senior offensive lineman Owen Paden. Elected to the Northeast Media all-district team were the running back Shivers, offensive lineman Taylor and senior kicker Andrew Runge, all-purpose defender Grubb and linebacker Runge on the Class 3 and 4 first team; and the running back Runge, offensive lineman Paden, defensive lineman Taylor, linebacker McCurdy and defensive back Shivers on the second team.

Taylor and Grubb were each impressive at their respective positions this season, head coach Steve Haag said, because they were primary upperclassmen leaders this season after being surrounded with other upperclassmen last year. The Bulldogs were a younger team but navigated through the inexperience at times thanks to their leadership.

“Kendyr and Morgan have both been anchors at their positions for the past two years,” Haag said. “This year, they had to step up with the youth and inexperience we had on the field. Their production stayed as high as last year.

“They were both all-state last year, so I think they continued where they left off from 2021. Morgan was a little tougher since he had to play offense this year and move on defense, but he accepted the role and had the same amount of tackles in 3 less games.”

Grubb finished with 120 tackles in 10 games, compared to the 11 tackles in 12 games from a season ago. This year, Grubb also had two interceptions returned for 98 combined yards and two tackles for loss.

Taylor was part of an offensive line that blocked in front of a potent rushing attack for the Bulldogs. Mexico averaged 216.6 yards per game and 6.5 yards per carry.
