North Callaway started strong in district play against Hallsville, jumping out to a 16-11 first quarter lead. But Hallsville would answer, and answer often, outscoring Callaway 22-11 in the second quarter, taking a 33-27 lead into the intermission.
The Thunderbirds came out of the break scoring the first four points of the third quarter. They would be their only points in the third as Hallsville went on a 12-0 run.
“We just couldn’t cut into their lead after that,” said Callaway coach Matt Miller.
Hallsville would outscore the T-Birds 25-15 in the second half for the 58-42 decision.
Sophomore Matthew Weber led the Thunderbirds with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Freshman Sam Pezold had 10 points off the bench and senior Cody Cash closed out his Callaway basketball career with 10 points. Fellow senior Noah Scrogum had 8 rebounds to lead the team.
AJ Austene led Hallsville with 21 points. Colton Hobbs finished with 15 and Jalen George scored 12.
The win was Hallsville’s fifth in a row.
“We started out really well,” said Miller. “Hallsville’s a good team, they will give Macon a really good game.”
Hallsville was the tournament’s No. 3 seed; Callaway was No. 6.
Miller also credited his seniors for their play. Seniors are Cody Cash, Bryce Clark, Grant Eichman and Noah Scrogum.
North Callaway closes out their 2020-21 campaign at 12-13.
