North Callaway bats bring boom in 11-1 district-opening win vs Belle
North Callaway loves it when its bats are loud.
The Ladybirds finished with 10 hits and wrapped up their opening game in the Class 2 District 3 tournament at South Callaway in Mokane early by defeating Belle 11-1 in five innings. Kymorie Myers just missed out on a home run in the fifth inning, but it was enough to bring home the clinching run to send No. 3 seed North Callaway (16-14) to a 6 p.m. Monday semifinal game with No. 2 seed New Bloomfield (18-10).
Most of North Callaway’s damage was early and often in the first two innings, scoring six runs in the first inning and three runs in the second inning. The pitcher Megan Schmidt hit a RBI triple in her first at-bat in the first inning and followed that with a single to finish her day 2-for-2 and two walks.
In the circle, Schmidt struck out 10 Belle (7-10) hitters and allowed one earned run on three hits in five innings.
Schmidt had plenty of offensive support, including two RBI from Myers, a 3-for-3 day from Ella Slater with a RBI, and a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI from Lia Bondurant.
Head coach Mariah McKee said it was nice to see, and especially hear, North Callaway’s bats being so loud after a while. Schmidt was also in command as McKee said she didn’t have many three-ball counts.
North Callaway played New Bloomfield early in September and won 8-4, which was part of the Ladybirds’ 4-0 record against district opponents this season.
