North Callaway softball makes statement in 6-1 win vs Elsberry
North Callaway softball wants to be competing for a conference title this year.
The Ladybirds made a good case they will stay in contention on Thursday after defeating Eastern Missouri Conference foe Elsberry 6-1. The Lady Indians (6-3-1, 3-2 EMO) had defeated North Callaway (9-3, 4-0 EMO) four of the previous five times, but the Ladybirds this season are now 4-0 in conference and were ranked ninth in the first state Class 2 poll.
Lauren Speight kept four-time reigning district champion Elsberry in check through five innings, allowing four hits, one walk and one hit to go with two strikeouts. Megan Schmidt kept the door closed in two innings of no-hit baseball with two strikeouts and one walk.
North Callaway had the advantage throughout the game as it scored twice in the first inning on one of three Elsberry errors. The Ladybirds continued to take advantage of Lady Indian mistakes in a four-run fifth inning as Olivia Knoepflein drew bases-loaded walk and then Brianna Prosser brought home three runs on a triple.
Prosser finished with two hits, and Ella Slater finished with two RBI on a night that the teams combined for nine hits.
North Callaway is tied at the top of the conference standings with Class 2 No. 3 Bowling Green (9-2, 4-0 EMO) and will look to maintain momentum starting at 8:30 a.m. today against Cairo (7-1) in the Cairo Softball Tournament. The Ladybirds open the day on the softball field.
Ladybirds jump on Clopton early in 11-4 win
North Callaway’s offense didn’t waste much time on Tuesday at Clopton.
The Ladybirds defeated the Lady Hawks 11-4 in the Eastern Missouri Conference matchup, scoring eight runs in the first inning. They were led offensively by Megan Schmidt going 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI and Kymorie Myers going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Olivia Knoepflein had an eventful night after coming in to the pitch with one out in the second inning. Clopton (1-5-1, 0-2 EMO) had just scored four unearned runs against Lauren Speight so then Knoepflein struck out a career-high nine and walked two in 5⅓ hitless innings. At the plate, Knoepflein was 2-for-3.
