Ladybirds turn over Wright City, win 63-40
The North Callaway girls hadn’t taken defensive control in its previous three games.
Head coach Tim Turlington said that changed Monday at Eastern Missouri Conference foe Wright City when the Ladybirds won 63-40.
Turlington said North Callaway (13-10, 5-3 EMO) was able to turn the Lady Wildcats (8-13, 1-6 EMO) over about 30 times, which led to good looks on the offensive end.
Natalie Shryock led the Ladybirds with 22 points, five steals and two 3-pointers, Riley Blevins followed with 13 points, five steals and five assists, and Lakyn Hartley had 12 points and five rebounds.
Wright City had a big lift from Jasmin Simpson as she scored 27 points while shooting 15-for-18 from the free throw line. Despite that, North Callaway led the Lady Wildcats 26-14 at halftime and grew the margin as the game wore on.
North Callaway junior Corynne Miller also scored her first bucket this season while going 2-for-2 at the free throw line, showing her quickness on defense.
The Ladybirds had a week off before hosting conference foe Mark Twain (0-19, 0-6 EMO) at 7 p.m. Monday.
Thunderbirds' defense reemerges in 53-37 win
The North Callaway boys have been waiting a while for four good quarters of defense.
The Thunderbirds had just that on Tuesday night at Eastern Missouri Conference foe Wright City, when they allowed less than 40 points for the first time since Jan. 16 in a 53-37 victory. The win snaps a five-game losing streak that included three losses with at least 60 points allowed.
“In the first half, we had trouble making our shots, but in the second half, especially the third quarter, the shooting came around,” head coach Matt Miller said. “It’s been a while since we had a win so it’s always nice to get back on the winning track.”
North Callaway (11-11, 4-4 EMO) had an 8-6 lead over Wright City (2-17, 1-6 EMO) after the first quarter and then 21-17 at halftime prior to an 18-11 third quarter.
Matthew Weber led the Thunderbirds with 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals, Sam Pezold followed with 10 points, Trenton Jones had a team-high 10 rebounds, and Braydn O’Neal finished with five assists. Wright City’s top scorer was three players with six points each.
North Callaway plays East Buchanan (13-7) in the first game of the Hall of Fame Classic at Father Tolton in Columbia at 10 a.m. today.
