It is a puzzle for North Callaway softball but is one it hopes to have solved by the start of the fall season.
The Ladybirds played in their first games of the summer June 21-22 in Centralia, facing Centralia, South Shelby, Silex and Canton on the first day and Van-Far, Monroe City, Richmond and North Shelby on the second day.
Head coach Mariah McKee said North Callaway had its most players come out the second day — only missing three players — so the Ladybirds were able to play around with the roster to start figuring out who is going to go where. McKee said like the 11 underclassmen the team had last year, this year’s group is going to have many freshmen and sophomores and with them again comes lots of potential.
“I just look for seeing how well they can communicate and seeing how well we can mesh and get along and just seeing where they fit,” McKee said. “We had a lot of moving parts the last two days because we’re just trying to figure out where we’re going to put people, what they can do and what they can’t do.”
North Callaway played at Fayette on June 27 after the event was rained out earlier this month and played more games on June 29 against New Franklin and Fayette.
The Ladybirds will then host a middle school and high school camp July 26-28.
“We work on a lot of stuff,” McKee said. “That way, when we go into practice, we’re not starting from scratch.”
