The Ladybird bats didn’t cool off all day despite the constant rain.
Light rain fell Saturday at the Cairo Tournament, but North Callaway won all three of its games to earn their first tournament championship of the season. The Ladybirds defeated the host Cairo 9-1, Class 4 Kirksville 8-6 and defending Cairo tournament champion as well as Class 1 state champion La Plata 10-3.
Megan Schmidt had one of two stellar outings in the circle against Cairo, pitching seven innings with 10 strikeouts, two hits and one unearned run. Kymorie Myers led the offensive support by going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Ella Slater and Faith Cash each added two RBI.
Kirksville fought back from a 7-0 deficit with a six-run fifth inning in the semifinals. Myers again was a star by going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI, Maddy Gordon was 2-for-4 with a run scored and five other Ladybirds each had a RBI.
Schmidt pitched seven innings in the championship game against La Plata with 10 strikeouts, five hits and one earned run. Myers was 2-for-3 with a double and a two-RBI home run, and Liv Knoepflein finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and a RBI. Knoepflein had the game-winning RBI double and Faith Cash had a two-RBI double in a four-run North Callaway third inning that overtook a 3-0 early deficit.
North Callaway plays Harrisburg (6-7) and Moberly (5-7) at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively, on Saturday in Harrisburg.
