The Bulldogs batted around in the first and tacked on two in the seventh, but could not overcome a seven run sixth inning Boonville rampage, falling 14-7 on the road Tuesday.
Mexico’s hill corps had done well, but the bullpen struggled in the bottom of the sixth. A hit batter, two walks, a costly wild pitch and four Pirate base hits, including a round tripper by Peyton Taylor spelled doom for the Bulldogs.
Until that point the outlook had been promising. Ty Prince drew a walk, stole second and was sacrificed to third. Daeye Miller’s base hit drove Prince home.
Following the Bulldogs’ aggressive policy on the bases, Miller swiped second and scored on a Landon Kleinsorge single.
Another theft of second put Mexico’s diminutive designated hitter in scoring position. He made it a three run opening inning when Andrew Runge slapped a base hit to left.
Josh Forbis and Tristan Playter added to the tally in the fourth, with Jesse Fennewald contributing a big hit. But the Pirates kept pace and then took advantage of Mexico errors and a couple of walks to eke out a 7-5 lead going into the fateful sixth.
Hits by Fennewald, Kleinsorge and Runge plated two in the top of the seventh to gain the Bulldogs a bit of redemption.
The loss put Mexico at 8-8 on the season.
