The ball seemed to be rolling the Coyotes’ way on Friday night at home.
Paris defeated Northland Christian 74-8 at home after coming away with nine turnovers – five interceptions and four fumble recoveries – to set a new school single-game 8-man record that was set with a 72-8 victory to open this season. Payden Crain had three interceptions, and Gatlin Fountain and Brad Skinner each finished with seven tackles.
Head coach Cody Carney said Northland Christian (2-2) had some key injuries it was dealing with, including its best player, and his team was opportunistic. For example, a pass hit off the hands of a Northland Christian into the clutches of a Paris defensive back.
“Our defense played outstanding,” Carney said. “We held them to 49 yards of offense. The turnovers just started adding up for them.”
Gatlin Fountain, who finished with 63 yards rushing, ran for a 43-yard touchdown on his first touch of the game after Carney said Paris (3-1) opened the game with a trick play. The Coyotes had 10 different kids take the ball into the end zone, including on a run by lineman Ian Farrell, a 40-yard interception return by Crain, a 32-yard run by quarterback Luke Ensor and a 55-yard run by Chase Graupman for his first rushing touchdown of the season.
Ensor had three touchdown passes along 77 yards on 5-for-6 passing, and Sawyer Clements ran for two touchdowns and had 77 yards on six carries. Overall, the Coyotes accumulated 480 yards of total offense and led 62-0 at halftime. Paris had 403 yards rushing yet Carney said he didn’t have a single kid with over 100 yards.
“We ran the ball a lot,” Carney said. “We started off throwing quite a bit but went back to the run once we got up.”
Paris lost to state-ranked Braymer last week, but it was still its first loss of the season. The Coyotes face another tough 8-man program at 7 p.m. Friday at North Shelby (3-1) in the conference opener.
“It was good to see where our mental status and how we were going to bounce back from adversity,” Carney said. “North Shelby, those kids are coached well by (David) Stuckey up there. They usually have some big and strong kids.”
