Paris needed a bit of time before a relentless offensive attack on Friday.
The Coyotes then had 37-yard and 36-yard touchdown runs by Brad Skinner and Gatlin Fountain, respectively, to take a 14-8 first-quarter lead before eventually winning 72-8 against Keytesville with Brunswick, Northwestern (Mendon). The Coyotes had 472 yards of total offense and had five different players run for a touchdown to contribute to its 8-man football scoring record in a single game.
Head coach Cody Carney said Paris worked through “first-game jitters and first-game mistakes” but quickly overcame its slow start.
“Our kids settled in and just started executing well,” Carney said. “We are a bit of a new team this year in what we’re trying to do. We were trying to work in a good mix of run and good mix of pass. We settled into the run.”
Carney said the big running plays opened up the passing game well and had multiple kids that had performances on the ground. Gatlin Fountain led the way with 94 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries, Aron McCain followed with 89 yards and two touchdowns on two carries, Skinner had 41 yards and a touchdown in three carries, and Khristian Harvey had 69 yards and a touchdown on two carries.
Logan Mitchell’s two catches from Luke Ensor went for 70 yards and two touchdowns, but Paris only had to throw the ball nine times.
“We’re blessed,” Carney said. “We’ve got a few guys coming in that can jump in and run the ball for us.”
Keytesville only finished with 165 total yards and just one first-quarter touchdown. Skinner and Fountain each led the Paris defense with nine tackles, Chase Kendrick followed with eight tackles, and Dayton Rush had seven tackles.
“Our defense played pretty well altogether as one unit,” Carney said. “That’s the biggest we preached this week – not necessarily making the play but taking on a block a certain way and turning the runner back to our teammates who can make the play. A lot of our guys did a good job with their technique.”
Paris plays at Orrick (1-0), who defeated Southwest (Livingston County) with Hale, Tina-Avalon 56-0 last Friday, at 7 p.m. Friday.
