Paris energetic for first 8-man home game, victory

Paris was amped and ready for Friday.

The Coyotes had plenty of reason to feel energetic as they were hosting their first 8-man football game in school history against Slater and secured first ever 8-man football win with a 56-12 victory. They finished with 282 yards of toral offense as they ran for 218 yards, which was spread amongst 10 kids, and six touchdowns.

Head coach Cody Carney said Slater managed to collect 170 yards on offense and wasn’t allowed run wild on special teams either as Paris (1-1) recovered two onside kicks. The Coyote defense didn’t allow Slater (0-2) to keep the ball long to give the offense plenty of opportunities to go to work.

“Our offense and defense were just feeding off each other,” Carney said. “The defense played really well as they had some good receivers and we had some good coverage. We had some sacks and forced some bad balls. On offense, our offensive line was blocking a lot better tonight.”

The offensive line blocked for many players as mentioned earlier, and quarterback Colton Kendrick had the most productive night, running for 119 yards and two touchdowns to go with 64 yards on 4-for-7 passing. Gatlin Fountain added 20 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries and led the defense with seven tackles and two sacks. Aron McCain had 23 yards and a touchdown on five carries, Payden Crane had 31 yards on four carries, and Brandon Callison had a rushing touchdown to go with a sack on defense – Reid Ragsdale and Evin Reichmann also had one sack each.

Kendrick also recorded a defensive touchdown when he took a fumble back 75 yards in the second quarter to help the Coyotes build a 54-6 halftime lead. Carney said that play demonstrated why Paris was good all night.

“On that fumble return for a touchdown, it was pretty electric,” Carney said. “The great thing was all of our guys were hustling down the field making big blocks. He probably weaved back and forth on the field about four times before he got to the endzone. It was pretty awesome to see the hustle and energy tonight.”

The two recovered onside kicks also played a part in Paris ripping away any momentum Slater could possibly obtain. Carney said those were done after considering the opposing personnel.

“We were trying to kick away from some of their athletes,” Carney said. “One of them was a deeper squib kick that ricocheted off a kid’s leg that we picked up. The other was right before halftime. We had scored and went for an onside to prevent them from getting the ball back and trying to score right before halftime.”

Paris hosts North Shelby (0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.
