The Community R-VI Lady Trojans improved to 9-1 after a 59-34 win over Van-Far last Tuesday.
Sarah Angel led the Lady Trojans with 22 points and 4 steals. Alexis Welch narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 18 points and 8 rebounds; Olivia Kuda had 11 points and 5 rebounds and Paige Meyer 4 points, 3 rebounds.
With the two schools just 15 miles apart, Community and Van-Far matchups are eagerly anticipated. But the rivalry has added meaning now.
“With Community moving up to class 2 and joining the district with Van-Far it has playoff implications as well,” said Lady Trojans coach Bob Curtis. “We knew this contest could affect district seeding and we wanted to come out and play well to give us a better path come playoff time.”
Curtis said he wanted to set the tone early and that’s just what the Lady Trojans did, getting out to a 16-7 first-quarter lead. They led 26-18 at the half and came out strong in the third quarter, outsourcing Van-Far 19-6 in the session.
“We really are starting to get offense out of multiple people,” Curtis said. “Olivia turned in a big game to go with our top leading scorers Sarah and Alexis who combined for 40.”
The coach pointed to the play of his inside players as well.
“Our forwards played well as Paige, Olivia, and Kylie all scored in the contest,” Curtis said. “We rebounded with them and kept a solid free-throw shooting team off the line for most of the game.”
Jan. 3-8, the ladies will compete in the New Franklin tournament
