It was the tale of two halves Monday, Jan. 25, as the North Callaway (7) girls opened play against Elsberry (2) in the 96th annual Bowling Green Tournament. The Thunderbirds held Elsberry to only 2 first-quarter points, and carried a commanding 20-7 lead into the half.
As the second half got underway, the tempo shifted Elsberry’s way as the Indian defense locked down, holding the Thunderbirds scoreless in the third quarter, entering the fourth with a 20-20 tie.
North Callaway coach Morgan Beamer believes her team’s fortunes will improve when they can eliminate sluggish quarters. Beamer cited Monday night’s third quarter as another example of having a bad quarter that leads to a loss.
“We didn’t block out, especially on defense,” Beamer added.
Callaway and Elsberry traded leads in a one-possession game in the fourth quarter before Elsberry would pad their lead and move into the winner’s bracket with a 30-26 win.
Freshman Abrielle Burgher led the Thunderbirds with 12 points and 6 steals. Senior Makenna Allen started the game hot, pouring in 10 points in the first half; she would be held scoreless in the second half. Allen led the team with 9 rebounds.
Candice Dowell led Elsberry with 10 points; Kylie Kinsler had 8, seven of which came in the fourth quarter.
In semifinal play, the Thunderbirds won via forfeit, as Winfield - who was upset by Bowling Green in the opening round - bowed out. With that, Callaway plays for consolation.
