The Bulldogs were busy over an extended weekend that began on Thursday at home against Fulton and continued through two tournaments.
Katie Bowen and Abbigale Drew took gold at the Gary Haag Invitational. Bowen added another first at the Liberty North Soaring Eagle event, while Drew came home with silver.
Kaylynn Pehle added to the success, winning the 132 class at Liberty North.
Drew faced a crowded field at the Gary Haag and swept it clean – four matches, four pins. The strong outing put her at 14-9 on the season, wrestling at 122. She recovered from an opening round defeat at Liberty North to record back to back pins and a silver medal.
Bowen had two opponents in the 102 weight class at the Gary Haag, where she captured a win by fall and a second by major decision to bring her season mark to 16-7. At North Liberty she conquered Lafayette’s Makenna Alden by fall and finished the meet with a 5-3 decision.
At 137, Pehle lost her opening round match at the Haag, but came back to win by pin before falling in the finale to Marceline’s Cassie Rodgers, who has just one loss on the year. Pehle’s effort earned third in the class.
Wrestling at 132 in Liberty North, Pehle polished off all three opponents by pin to sweep the class.
Choice Foster was 0-2 on the day at the Haag in 143, 0-3 at Liberty North. At 151 Brett Iman was winless at 151 in both events.
On Thursday at The Sports Complex Bowen had an uneventful day, winning by forfeit. Pehle had no opposition and it was the same for Pehle, Iman and Mariah McCann.
Drew and Foster lost their matches.
Drew takes first at Capital City
Abbigale Drew rode two pins and a bye to first place in the 122 class at the Capital City Girls Scramble on Jan. 8 in Jefferson City.
The Bulldogs brought home two more medals, thanks to Brett Iman and Choice Foster, who each picked up silver at the event.
Drew was undefeated on the day. Although Holly Parker of Tipton took her deep into another period, Drew overpowered her at the 3:39 mark. She received the bye in round two and then squared up against a familiar opponent – Chelsea Camponiano of Camdenton.
It was over quickly, as Drew got the drop at 1:01.
Iman’s day at 151 started with some extra rest. She waited out a first round bye before taking on Makalia Scott of Jefferson City. The time off may have helped. Iman pinned her opponent after a grueling match that went to 5:42.
In the final, however, Jefferson City’s Ezinne Opara won by fall at 0:27.
Foster was guaranteed a medal. Only her and Savena Hees were available at 143. The Jefferson City wrestler took both by fall.
Katie Bowen had a busy day in the 107 class. She made it to the third place match, but was edged 6-5 by Tipton’s Christina Loganbill.
Before that Bowen had some tight matches. After losing by fall in the opener, she battled Jadyn Scott of Jefferson City in a stalemate of a match. The single point Bowen earned was enough to take a decision.
After a bye, Bowen lost a 12-7 decision to Camdenton’s Taylor Mustain.
At 132 Kaylynn Pehle faced a challenging field – five matches against girls from five different schools. She lost four by fall and one by decision, 5-2 to Pleasant Hill’s CheyAnn Johnson.
But Pehle’s round two appearance against Ashlynn Dean of Hillsboro may have been her best performance. She battled deep into the match before being felled.
Ivy Perez had four rounds at 137. She went 0-4 on the day.
