The Trojans’ remarkable season came to an end on Wednesday night, as Community R6 fell in the sectional round at Leeton 61-48.
“With COVID looming and being quarantined, not knowing who was going to be available on a given night, I am very proud of the girls for grinding it out and making it a special year,” said head coach Bob Curtis, reflecting on the 24-2 season.
Despite the record, Community was given a road game for sectionals. The Trojans’ struggled to find their rhythm and first half miscues put them in a hole. Their normally reliable three point shooters struggled, making a comeback from their 32-20 halftime deficit more difficult.
Yet the Trojans rallied in the second half behind the steady hand of Alexis Welch, who scored 18 points on the night while securing 8 rebound. However, Leeton managed to keep pace.
Emmi Johnson put 8 points on the board and was strong under the glass. Emma Hombs and Brianna Beamer added 6 each, while Sarah Angel chipped in with 5. Shelby Clark (3) and Emma Angel (2) rounded out the scoring.
While the run may have ended, it was impressive nonetheless. The Trojans were unbeaten in conference play and took the district title for the fourth consecutive year.
Community’s seniors racked up a 99-14 record over four years of basketball.
