The Trojans are headed back to the Class 1 tournament.

Community R6 fended off visiting Jamestown on Friday night in the Class 1 District 10 title game, claiming a hard fought 57-41 victory.

“Jamestown plays a similar style to us in the fact that they press you full court and try to speed up the tempo,” said head coach Bob Curtis. “We knew coming into the game we had to make sure we got quality looks on the back of their press.”

As promised, the Eagles ran with Community from the start. But with Alexis Welch, Emmi Johnson and Emma Angel anchoring the defense, the Trojans made enough stops to nudge out to a 15-10 advantage after one. And then the offense began to romp.

It was a case of defense fueling the offense. Welch pulled down 8 rebounds, Sarah Angel nabbed four steal and Emma Angel deflected almost a dozen Jamestown passes that ended up as turnover points for the hosts.

Suddenly it was all Trojans – a 52-29 lead at the end of three, thanks in part to the hot hands of Brianna Beamer and Sarah Angel.

Beamer picked the Eagles apart with 26 points on the night and was 5 of 6 from the line. Angel added 16, to make for a deadly combination.

The Eagles tried to respond, clawing back 7 points in the final quarter. But Community had done more than enough by that point to hold them off.

In addition to the combined 42 points by Beamer and Sarah Angel, the Trojans’ attack was aided by Welch with 8, Johnson with 5 and Shelby Clark and Emma Angel with 2 each.

The 24-1 Trojans face Leeton on the road tonight at 6 p.m. in the Sectional round.
