Van-Far was looking good after one half Friday night.
South Callaway then stormed back with 21 unanswered second-half points to defeat the Indians at home 21-14. Tayber Gray ran for three touchdowns, including a 70-yard scramble to score early in the third quarter.
Van-Far made self-inflicted errors as well, head coach Lucas Gibson said, as the Indians lost two fumbles following a clean first half of offensive football with no penalties as well.
“That was the difference in the game: mental mistakes in the second half,” Gibson said. “Offsides here and there, and we just didn’t make good tackles.”
Gage Gibson led the team with 91 yards on 15 carries and 53 yards on four catches while Ty Evans followed with 42 yards on 14 carries. On defense, Gibson also led the team with nine tackles and was followed by Nikos Connaway with his six tackles and Evans with his five tackles.
Gibson said Van-Far managed to intercept South Callaway and turn that into a touchdown eventually in the second quarter. By that time, Gage Gibson had a receiving and rushing touchdown as the Indians were running everything they wanted.
Evan Utterback also had a solid game on the defensive line following missing most of last season with a broken ankle. He had two tackles for loss and a sack.
“I was really proud of Evan Utterback,” Gibson said. “He missed 75 percent of the season so he’s ready to be out there.”
On Friday, Van-Far (0-1) hosts Russellville (1-0), who won 49-0 at Missouri Military Academy last week.
