The Bulldogs were poised for a memorable 2020 season. Head coach Haley Schafer could put 17 seniors on the pitch – a veteran squad that had played and trained together for four years.
It was a team that may have run deep into the postseason. While the what ifs of 2020 will always linger, the new season brings both relief and greater unknowns.
Mexico is a younger, somewhat untested team this time around. And that can be a positive.
“We get to start over,” said Miriam Gleeson. “It’s exciting.”
It will be the first time the Bulldogs play on the field’s artificial surface, which was installed last year. That adds to the unique appeal of the upcoming season.
And already Schafer has observed a spirit develop along with the fundamentals of practice.
“They are absolutely fearless,” she pointed out. “And they don’t have bad habits.”
But forecasting the season is difficult. Other teams on the schedule face similar challenges. There are positions to fill, formations to learn and chemistry to build.
“I hope it comes together quickly,” said Allie Meyer. “We have a lot of good teams early on the schedule.”
Most importantly, the girls are back on the pitch with games to play.
“It’s going to be an interesting season,” Shelby Kennemore pointed out.
