North Callaway senior Pressley Schmauch competed at the Class 3 MSHSAA state championships at Gans Creek in Columbia, which was her fourth trip to state. Schmauch moved up 14 places during the girls 5,000 meters to finish with her best state time of 20:38 — 10 seconds off her personal-best — but missed a medal in 54th place.

“Her times were comparable to the rest of the season,” head coach Brooke Fischer said. “It was her last race of her high school career so we just told her to go out and have fun. As long as she did that, we were going to be proud.”

Schmauch did win a state medal as a freshman to still make her the latest Schmauch to compete in multiple state races for North Callaway and win at least one individual medal. Her sisters, Reyna and Daelyn, qualified for state three times and two times, respectively, with Reyna being all-state twice and Daelyn earning the honor once.

Reyna was actually an assistant coach this season to her former teammate and the first-year head coach Fischer. Prior to that, Reyna was a close supporter of Pressley as she has done for years.

“We have each other to push each other but also practice with each other,” Schmauch said. “Me and Daelyn ran on the same team so we ran together every practice. Being a coach this year, I was able to be with Pressley at all her practices and push her that way.”

Reyna Schmauch said Pressley is determined during every race. Fischer said Schmauch passing so many runners while not falling behind much herself is a typical Pressley Schmauch performance and demonstrates that determination.

“She sets goals for herself, and she’s determined to reach them,” Fischer said. “It is very much a mental sport, and she’s strong in that area. She doesn’t let the little things get in her way.”

“I made it to every race that I could over the past few years if I was coaching or being in college,” Reyna Schmauch said. “Before races, she’d game plan what she wanted to do and what goals she had for the season or for each race.”

Reyna Schmauch said there will be no more Schmauchs in the future, but Fischer said Pressley will have a lasting effect on the team.

“It is definitely someone the other girls look up to,” Fischer said. “They came and watched today, and that’s their goal now. She’s inspiring to the rest of the team. The way she practices, they’re going to realize that we’re going to have to do that.”
