OATS Transit is celebrating a milestone this month — 55 years of providing transportation services to Missourians. What began in 1971 as a grassroots effort by a group of dedicated volunteers determined to help people who were isolated in their homes has grown into one of the largest rural transportation providers in the nation. Since the first buses hit the road on Nov. 1, 1971, OATS Transit has remained committed to its mission of enhancing quality of life by providing safe, caring and reliable transportation services to people of all ages across Missouri.
“Celebrating 55 years is an incredible milestone, but for us, this anniversary isn't just about looking back—it's about moving forward,” said Dorothy Yeager, OATS Transit Executive Director. “The legacy we’ve built over more than half a century provides a rock-solid foundation for the work that still lies ahead. As we look to the future, we are more energized than ever to innovate, expand our reach, and meet today’s challenges with the same passion that sparked our founding 55 years ago.”
In addition to providing transportation to the rural general public, OATS Transit operates numerous routes serving sheltered workshops, day programs and employers, along with providing essential transportation for riders traveling to dialysis treatments and other medical appointments. These specialized services help ensure Missourians have access to the care, employment and programs they depend on every day.
The availability and level of service in many communities is made possible through the generous support of local governments, along with agencies and community partners whose funding helps keep transportation accessible to those who need it.
